Last Blog

In my writing I have improved a lot. I can say I can now write an academic research paper. My strategies that work for me is having a very good outline. The paper that was the easiest was the paper on our free choice short story. I thought it was easy because it was something that I has interest in. I really think all of the lessons in class helped me out a lot. I feel I can write a college level paper now, especially a lot better than I could before being in   Intro to Lit.

girl vs. boys

Both of the songs consider gender in them. In "If I Were A Boy" Beyonce talks all about boys and how they get anything they want. She talks mostly about how being a boy is easier than being a girl. In the other song "Sold" John Montgomery explains a pretty lady that he spots at an auction. He talks about how this girl is so pretty and how she has everything. Both songs say good things about being a girl and a boy.

"The Flea"

In the poem "The Flea" I believe the flea is like someone that the man is cheating on his wife with. The flea is always around but the wife can not get the flea to go away. At the end when the author talks about the flea dying I think he is saying the man no longer cheats on his wife anymore which makes the flea dead to the married couple.

Poerty

I really have not has much experience with poetry. In high school we read a few poems and plays but not very many. Poetry really does not catch my attention. I have never been given the opportunity to read poetry that is interesting.

March 24

In Wednesday class we read about the part where Dr. Faustus tries to sell a fake horse. Dr. Faustus also takes off his legs and puts them back on, this is an example of Faustus using the black magic for the wrong reason. I don't really think he is using the magic for the wrong thing because he is not hurting anyone. The reason why he wanted to get the magic so he could use it for power. I believe he is not using the magic to hurt anyone because he is scared of the consequences. He should have thought giving his soul away a little more throughly.

March 22

While having the discussion I started to understand a lot more about the reading. When you told us about Faustian Bargain that really seemed interesting to me. I think it's interesting to think about how much someone could sacrifice something just for something else. I really started to think about how Dr. Faustus just decided to give away his soul for black magic. I really want to use the topic of Faustian Bargain for my paper or at least something related to it.

Act 5

I think act 5 is all about him perfecting his magic skills. He really does not think he will need the other men later on. I really think once everything is perfected he will get rid of the other two. He is really trying to get everything just right with the black magic.

I believe the last part of the story is just talking about black magic. I think the 3 people are just talk talking about how the black magic could work.
Overall reading this story is difficult for me. It takes me awhile to actually see what is really going on in the story.

Class Evaluation

This class is definitely a challenge for me. Most of the things we have to do in class I have never had to do that is basically why I struggle with this class. The grammar guides are a good thing to me because I think they do more than the sentence level corrections. I do like the class discussions because I learn more about the story than from what I got from reading it. I really do hope this class helps me in the long run.

"What Sacagawea Means to Me"

-The point of view of this story is first-person narrator.
-The setting was kind of confusing to me but I believe it is in the future and also in the nineteenth-century.

"The Birthmark" and "Bartleby, the Scrivener"

The characters in "The Birthmark" were plausible and motivated. In "Bartleby, the Scrivener" the characters were consistent and not motivated. Both of the stories are different with character because in "The Birthmark" were very motivated to do what they wanted. We found that both of the stories' plots were media res. When reading both of these stories we found that there is different ways that a story can be told. Thinking about being able to switch the stories for example, flashback is pretty interesting. Both of the stories could be interpreted differently if being changed around.

Discussion on Wednesday

The discussion really opened my eyes on the way some people look at Native Americans. I'm from Iowa and there is a significant difference in the way people view Native Americans. A lot of the things people were saying in class did feel very wrong to me. I do not think someone should just get judged because of the race he or she was born with. Everyone should just be treated equal no matter what.

Fake Twitter Accounts

The way I saw this article was being a celebrity always is not the best. The celebrities always have to worry about who is talking about them and what is true and what is false. I would be very frustrated if I always had to worry about things like that. Having a person pretend like a celebrity is so wrong in many different ways. I believe some people do not really see celebrities as real people that have feelings. Being a celebrity would be good in many ways but having someone pretend like you would just be terrible. On twitter accounts you can basically say your name is anything you want but just hope you do not get caught.

First Paper

Writing the paper on We was not too difficult it just really took some thinking. I really only had some trouble with analyzing thoroughly in my paragraphs. Overall the writing was okay for me.

The Metamorphosis

Reading the story a second time made me catch somethings that I did not see before. I really do not like this story because how mean they are to Gregor. Gregor only thinks about his family and they can't even think about him at all. The first time I read it I did not really catch that Gregor never thinks about how bad it is that he is a bug. The only thing he worries about is his family.

Paper Topic!!!!

For my paper topic I have decided to talk about happiness and freedom. I think these are very large issues in the book. I was really interested in both of these topics while reading We. I hope this is a good topic!!

Vocabulary

Style- The style of the story to me is like a dairy in a way. It's basically all about this man's life.
Tone- The tone of the story is pretty intense and always keeps you thinking.
Irony- The irony of the story to me is when D-503 is in love with the I-330 and then finds out his friend likes her also.
Plot- The plot of the story goes along with D-503's life and all the events that happens to him.
Characterization- There are not too many characters in the story at this point, the main characters so far are D-503, I-330, and R-13.
Setting- One State.
Point of View- The point of view is first person by D-503.
Symbol- From the descussion in class I definatly think the symbol is God.
Theme- From reading the story I think the story is all about being able to become your own person and being able to think for yourself. I also think the story wants people to see having freedom is really important.

Hi, my name is Leah Semple. My year in school right now is freshman. While in my English 101 I learned quite a bit. Some things in the class were hard for me but I got through all of it. My major is Elementary Education. I am also thinking about having a minor in reading. Right now i work at the Daycare Center in Vermillion. I hope to really enjoy taking this class.
